Sex Therapy

Sexuality is a natural part of being human, yet it can sometimes feel complicated. Social expectations, misinformation and limited access to accurate sexual health education can leave people feeling uncertain about their body, desire, relationships or their own relationship with sex and intimacy. People can carry these concerns quietly for months or even years, feeling embarrassed, believing they should already have the answer or simply hoping things will improve on their own.

We now understand a great deal about sexual health, sexual anatomy, the physiology of sexual response, and the many personal and relationship factors that can influence desire and intimacy. Sex therapy brings this knowledge together with counselling and adult sex education, helping you understand what may be happening and explore a way forward that feels right for you.

Why do people reach out for sex therapy?

People seek support for many different reasons, including:

  • Low desire or changes in libido
  • Differences in desire between partners
  • Difficulty becoming or staying aroused
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm
  • Painful sex, fear of pain or concerns about penetration
  • Feeling disconnected from your body
  • Changes following childbirth, menopause, illness, disability, ageing or medication
  • Loss of affection, intimacy or sexual connection
  • Avoiding sex or feeling pressure around sex
  • Difficulty talking about sex, needs, consent or boundaries
  • Sexual shame, low confidence or body-image concerns
  • The effects of difficult past experiences or trauma on intimacy
  • Wanting to understand your sexuality, preferences or responses more clearly
  • Rebuilding intimacy following relationship difficulties
  • Difficulty managing sexual urges or pornography use
  • Finding new ways to experience closeness when sex has changed

You do not need to have a major problem to benefit from sex therapy. Some people simply want accurate information, a better understanding of themselves or their partner, or more confidence discussing intimacy.

What can sex therapy help with?

Sex therapy can help you develop a better understanding of your body and how arousal and desire work. It can also help you recognise the physical, emotional, relational and situational factors that may be affecting your sexual wellbeing.

Positive outcomes may include:

  • Understanding your body and arousal system more clearly
  • Communicating your needs, preferences and boundaries
  • Better understanding yourself or your partner
  • Reducing pressure, confusion, shame or blame
  • Developing more respectful and mutually satisfying relationships
  • Finding ways for both partners’ needs to be heard and negotiated with care
  • Building confidence, choice and a greater sense of freedom
  • Increasing enjoyment, affection, intimacy and connection
  • Exploring different ways of experiencing pleasure and closeness
  • Making informed decisions about your sexual health and relationships

Some sexual concerns also have physical or medical factors. Where appropriate, I can help you identify when another professional may be useful and support you in connecting with services such as your GP, a sexual health practitioner, a pelvic health physiotherapist, or another relevant specialist.

Sex therapy is conversation-based; there is no physical contact or sexual activity during sessions. Any education, resources or startegies suggested will be discussed with you and tailored to your needs.
