Relationships can be important to us and still become difficult. You may care about each other but keep having the same arguments, avoiding certain topics, or feeling more like housemates than partners.
Sometimes there has been a specific event, such as infidelity, a breakdown in trust or a major life change. In other cases, problems develop gradually, and neither person knows how to make things better.
Relationship counselling provides structured time to talk about what is happening with the support of an experienced counsellor.
You may be looking for help with:
You don’t need to wait until the relationship is at breaking point. Some couples seek counselling to address a problem early, while others want to improve a relationship that is already working reasonably well.
Relationship counselling is available to couples and individuals. You can attend together, or come on your own to work through a relationship concern.
I work with people across different genders, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and relationship structures. I don’t assume that every relationship should look or function in the same way. The focus is on understanding what matters to the people involved and whether the relationship is respectful, workable and meeting their needs.
Depending on your circumstances, counselling may help you:
The purpose is not to force a particular outcome. Sometimes the goal is to repair and strengthen the relationship. At other times, counselling helps people decide whether the relationship can continue and what should happen next.
The first session focuses on understanding what has brought you to counselling, how each person sees the situation and what you would like help with. You do not need to agree on everything before attending. It is common for each person to understand the problem differently. You can discuss those differences as part of the counselling process.
Couples counselling is not suitable for every situation. Where there is ongoing violence, coercive control, intimidation or fear, individual support may be safer and more appropriate. If you are unsure whether couples counselling is suitable for your circumstances, you can discuss this before or during the first appointment.
Relationship counselling is available face-to-face in Caboolture and through secure online appointments across Australia.
No referral is required. This is a private-pay counselling service, and Medicare rebates do not apply.
You can book a relationship counselling appointment online or contact me if you have questions before booking.
I’m Jicinta Elliott, a registered clinical counsellor with more than 15 years of counselling experience and additional training in couples therapy, family therapy, relationship counselling and sex therapy.
My approach is practical, honest and respectful. I don’t take sides or decide who is right. Instead, I pay attention to what happens between you, what starts the conflict, how each person responds and how the same pattern continues. This does not mean treating every behaviour as equal or excusing hurtful behaviour. Each person is encouraged to speak honestly, listen to the other person’s experience and take responsibility for their part in the relationship.
Experienced professional support dedicated to your relationship success.
